The fortnight of the ancestors
Sixteen lunar days given entirely to those who came before you. Astrologically this is the Moon waning through the ancestral quarter — the period when unresolved family patterns surface most plainly in a chart. Where Pitru Dosh sits, it usually shows as delay: delayed marriage, delayed children, delayed settlement, work that never quite lands.
Tarpan is offered in the Aparahna span (roughly midday to mid-afternoon), never after dusk. Sarva Pitru Amavasya, on 10 October, covers every ancestor whose tithi you do not know.
- Offer water, black sesame and rice on your family's tithi
- Feed someone who cannot repay you — that is the core of the rite
- Speak your grandparents' names aloud; write down what you inherited from them
